<p>On February 6th, Google had an announcement that enhances their online advertising solutions, so here is the the post that was shared on the Google blog.  You can also get more information about this on this link: <a href="http://www.google.com/adwords/enhancedcampaigns/">Google Adwords Enhanced Campaigns</a>.  The new announcement is Google&#8217;s &#8221;first step to help you more simply and smartly manage your ad campaigns in today’s multi-device world.&#8221;</p>

<p>Being able to target a mobile device with an ad based on their location of the consumer is something very exciting.  Dealers can target their messages based on the proximity of the consumer to the dealership, which I think would be ideal for Fixed Ops marketing as well as car sales in competitive markets.</p>
<p>Here is the information on the Adwords enhancements from the<a href="http://adwords.blogspot.com/2013/02/introducing-enhanced-campaigns.html"> blog post</a> made by Sridhar Ramaswamy, Senior Vice President of Engineering</p>
<h2>Why enhanced campaigns?</h2>
<p>People are constantly connected and moving from one device to another to communicate, shop and stay entertained. In fact, a <a href="http://services.google.com/fh/files/misc/multiscreenworld_final.pdf">recent study</a> of multi-device consumers found that 90% move sequentially between several screens to accomplish a task. There’s also a proliferation of new devices — PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones, hybrid devices, mini-tablets, televisions, and more. And there are many more digital screens and devices to come, with the lines between them continuing to blur. For example, as devices converge, consumer behaviors on tablets and desktops are becoming very similar.</p>
<p>This creates great opportunities for businesses, but can also make marketing more complex and time-consuming. For example, a pizza restaurant probably wants to show one ad to someone searching for “pizza” at 1pm on their PC at work (perhaps a link to an online order form or menu), and a different ad to someone searching for “pizza” at 8pm on a smartphone a half-mile from the restaurant (perhaps a click-to-call phone number and restaurant locator). Signals like location, time of day, and the capabilities of the device people are using have become increasingly important in showing them the right ad.</p>
<p>With enhanced campaigns, instead of having to cobble together and compare several separate campaigns, reports and ad extensions to do this, the pizza restaurant can easily manage all of this in one single place. Enhanced campaigns help you reach people with the right ads, based on their context like location, time of day and device type, across all devices without having to set up and manage several separate campaigns.</p>

Technology is enabling people to take action on your ads in new ways. Potential customers may see your ad and download your app, or they may call you. It’s been hard for marketers to easily measure and compare these interactions. <p>A combination of Dataium’s contextual behavior analysis and Hooklogic’s targeting incentives, resulted in redemption rates above 30 percent. Based on the high performance of the combined offering, the integration between the partners will be expanded in to further increase results.</p>

<p>Google is responding to dealer requests for clarity  as well as all business owners that understand in impact of online reviews that are very visible in Google search.</p>
<p><strong><em>Will this change increase the number of reviews that will appear on your Google+ Local page?</em></strong></p>
<p>Here is what Google has to say as of today:</p>

<p><b>We’ve made some recent improvements to our spam detection algorithms that have increased the number of reviews that appear on some local Google+ pages. We hope this improves your local experience!</b></p>
<p>Online reviews have been in the news a lot recently, and we at Google are committed to helping people to get ratings, reviews, and recommendations that are relevant, helpful, and trustworthy. To protect both business owners and customers from spam reviews, we have systems in place that may remove individual reviews.</p>
<p>No one likes spam, and we’d like to talk about what you can do to make sure all of the reviews on Google+ Local are useful, honest, and written by real people!</p>
<p>For reviewers:</p>
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">Make sure you’ve taken a look at our <a href="http://support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=2622994&amp;topic=2624941&amp;ctx=topic" target="_blank">review content guidelines</a>.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Sometimes you may want to review multiple locations of the same business, such as your favorite fast food chain. Just remember to tailor each review to the specific location. Others will want to know what sets that location apart &#8211; be it the super friendly drive thru person, or maybe the unexpectedly awesome lake views.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Don’t write reviews for your current employer. We don’t allow reviews from current owners or employees.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Spam bots use URLs to redirect to other sites or potentially spread malware. We won’t show reviews with links, so, don’t put URLs in the text of your reviews</li>
</ul>

<p>For business owners:</p>
<p></b></p>
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">Be wary of an SEO or reputation management service that promises to generate reviews for your business. We’ve seen companies make up fake glowing testimonies &#8212; and we’ll take them down.</li>
<li dir="ltr">We don’t take down negative reviews for simply being negative for anyone, regardless of any other relationships with Google. Instead, we encourage you to utilize the owner response functionality to respond to the review and address the user’s concerns.</li>
<li dir="ltr">If a third party claims that they know how to remove reviews from Google, don’t believe them. Google does not work with any third party reputation management companies and we certainly don’t remove reviews unless they violate our guidelines.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Don’t set up a computer or tablet device in your place of business for customers to leave reviews on site. Consider printing out a QR code or sending a reminder e-mail so customers can review on their own time.</li>
<li dir="ltr">Remember, we don’t allow you to give customers free gifts or discounts for leaving reviews.</li>
</ul>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If your dealership is not using targeted display advertising, banner retargeting, and video pre-roll retargeting, you are missing out on a very affordable way to keep your brand in front of consumers during their car shopping lifecycle.  According to Google, 74% of car buyers are in the marketing over 30 days! But I am getting ahead of myself&#8230;I will come back to this point shortly.</p>
<p>As a student of online marketing, I have been noticing that some of the largest online retailers are using a new form of banner advertising:  <strong>dynamic product banners</strong>.  Recently, I visited Macys.com to shop for some kitchen goods.  I love the color orange. Martha Stewart sells a line of ceramic cast iron pots in orange that are priced much better than Le Creusette.  I saw the Martha Stewart pots on sale at Macy&#8217;s during the Christmas season.</p>
<h2>Martha Stewart Is Following Me</h2>
<p>I did not purchase the Martha Stewart &#8220;dutch oven&#8221; in orange that day.  On the following day, I started seeing ads on various websites for the EXACT products that I viewed on Macys.com.   The banner ads were NOT static.  In fact, it contained ALL the items that I searched for on Macys.com the previous day.  The banner ad that I saw is highlighted in green:</p>

<p>Yes, I like to cook!  When I clicked on any item in the banner, it took me right to the product page.  In the car world, this would be the Vehicle Detail Page (VDP).  It caught me off guard at first, and then I saw the genius in the strategy.</p>
<p>So you can imagine my satisfaction when I started to see dynamic car inventory banner ads this month. That&#8217;s correct, I have started to see banner ads with scrolling, live inventory based on Vehicle Detail Pages (VDP) that I viewed on automotive websites.  I am often mystery shopping dealers or checking out how they merchandise their cars. I am on many retargeting lists, which is fine with me.</p>

<h2>Dynamic Automotive Banner Advertising</h2>
<p>In January,  I started to see dynamic inventory ads running from Cars.com, like the one shown above. The inventory in this vertical banner, scrolls up and down, and showed the Pohanka Auto Group&#8217;s cars that I viewed on Cars.com.</p>
<p>More frequently, I have started to see dynamic ads for Chevrolet and Volkswagen dealers.  In fact, one of my digitally savvy clients sent me an email yesterday, asking me how they could get dynamic inventory in their banner ads.  They sent to me the screen shot below:</p>

<p>This dealer had visited Emich Volkswagen&#8217;s website and viewed a few cars that they had in stock.  The banner ads that were following him on KBB.com, had the <strong>EXACT inventory that they viewed</strong> on Emich&#8217;s Cobalt website.  The arrows in the ad, allows the consumer to scroll through inventory!</p>
<p>So, I assumed that Cobalt must have started to offer this cutting edge advertising product, just like Macys.com is using.</p>
<h2>Note To Self: Call Cobalt And Get The Scoop</h2>
<p>My hunch was confirmed; Cobalt is jumping ahead of the competition by offering dealers dynamic banner ads with live inventory, based on which VDP&#8217;s the consumer viewed.  This is very cool!  This takes retargeting to an entirely new level for car dealers.</p>
<p>Do all Cobalt dealers have this advertising product activated? Not yet.</p>
<p>Dealers first have to be on the Cobalt DAP program.  Secondly, they have to spend more than the minimum investment, to trigger these advanced ads.   For example, if a GM Dealer, using a Cobalt website, spends more than the base amount for a DAP ($2,000/mo) the supplemental Flex DAP spend (this can be $1,000-10,000 depending on market) now gives them this capability and access to premium ad inventory.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Note to dealers:</span> </strong> If you are only spending $2,000 &#8211; $3,000 a month on paid search, you are most likely not spending nearly enough to be found 24&#215;7 on desktop and mobile devices.   Also, if you have a minimum SEM budget you most likely do not have enough funds for some of the most effective advertising strategies like retargeting: display and video.</p>

<p>Edmunds is one of the sites that is included in the Cobalt Premium Network coverage.  Dealers in Cobalt&#8217;s Flex DAP programs automatically get retargeting ad placements on Edmunds and the other sites in the Cobalt Premium Network.  The ads served on these sites include <b>dynamic inventory retargeting ads</b>, which feature the <b>actual vehicles that the shopper specifically looked at on the dealer website</b>, and these are typically the dealer&#8217;s <b>best performing ads</b>.</p>

<p>Of course, the Cobalt program leverages the Google Display Network (GDN), which has a very wide reach.</p>
<h2>Cobalt Dealers Get Latest Insights at DMSC</h2>

<p>The Google Cars advertising beta is for new cars only and it displays live dealer inventory in search engine results.  The program generates leads directly sent to dealers.</p>
<h2>Michael Rose From Google To Share Program Findings</h2>
<p>I have just been informed that <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/c-michael-rose/2/210/77b" target="_blank">Michael Rose</a>, Automotive Industry Expert at Google, will be presenting a keynote session at the <a href="http://www.digitalmarketingstrategies.org/" target="_blank">2013 Digital Marketing Strategies Conference</a> (DMSC) regarding this beta advertising program for new cars.  The conference is in Orlando and runs February 5-7th, and is scheduled just prior to the NADA 2013 Convention.</p>
<p>Dealers should attend this general session to learn about Google&#8217;s Beta product for new car dealers in the San Francisco Bay area.  Participants will learn how it works, what it is, and what it is not. Google will share their learnings to date and open the session for Q&amp;A following a brief presentation.</p>

Neil was chosen based on his excitement and eagerness to join and learn from industry professionals such as Ralph Paglia and JD Rucker. Neil stated in his video, due to unfortunate events of 2012 such as Hurricane Sandy, his dealership had to undergo budget cuts in order to get back on track. Neil said he would “love the opportunity to win this scholarship and be in Orlando with some of the top automotive leaders”.</p>

<p>Last month I wrote about a new announcement from Google that will give dealers who manage their own Adwords campaigns a big boost in relevant ad building tools.   (See <a href="http://www.internetsalesmanager.org/profiles/blogs/google-adwords-dynamic-search-ads?xg_source=activity" target="_blank">Google Adwords to Prove VIN# Level PPC Campaigns</a>)</p>
<p>Dealers who outsource their Adwords management have more options if they want to implement inventory based advertising, which has proven to be very efficient when setup properly.</p>
<p>So, I have created a few screen shots on how the new system works to spur your creativity.  There are so many ways that this can be implemented, especially if you want to have compelling ads based on Manufacturer and Models.</p>
<h2>Campaign Creation</h2>
<p>The dynamic advertising feature is ideal for websites that have product pages that change often.  Vehicle Detail Pages (VDP) are constantly changing, so having ads show for ONLY in stock vehicles has a great appeal.  What is most compelling is that Google will scan the dealership website each day to make sure that the vehicles it choses to advertise are still available.</p>

<p>In the example above, I created a campaign for used cars  based on cars that are in stock.  I called the campaign &#8220;In Stock Used Cars&#8221; (see green box) and selected the &#8220;Dynamic Search Ads&#8221; option, shown in red.   Campaigns have associated budgets so by configuring Adwords in this way, I can control the amount of dollars allocated to VIN level advertising.</p>
<h2>Ad Group Creation</h2>
<p>Once the campaign is setup, you can create Ad Groups.  Ad Groups can be setup for specific manufacturers or they can be broad.  The customized strategy that dealers will use for this new feature is not covered in this article, but you should start to see how granular this can be set.  The initial setup may take a few hours but the long term benefits will easily pay off.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In this Ad Group I am focusing on any used Acura that is in stock.  The Headline will be written by Google based on the VDP data that it finds on the page.   If the VDP is for a 2011 Acura MDX the headline could read &#8220;<strong>2011 Acura MDX</strong>&#8221; or some variation based on the Page Title and the content on the page.  The granularity of the headline will be improved over time as well as search matching criteria.</p>
<p>Google is not requiring dealers to provide an inventory feed, which has many good points.  Once this Ad Group is setup, and a few ad variations created, we have one more step to take before we can start advertising all used Acuras in stock.</p>
<h2>Setting Pages For Adwords To Scan</h2>
<p>The next step is to click on the &#8220;Auto Targets&#8221; (green box) tab in the Ad Group setup and select the website pages that have Acura VDP&#8217;s.  In the example below, I am using the syntax for Dealer.com websites which can break out Acura cars in the <strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">/used/Acura</span></strong> directory or <strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">/certified/Acura/</span></strong> directory on their website. (see red box)</p>
<p>The slashes are important to keep in place.   VinSolutions websites do not distinguish new and used VDP&#8217;s  by the URL; all VDP&#8217;s have <strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">/vd/</span></strong> in them.  In this case you will need to use the Page Title feature or adjust your strategy.</p>
<p>Cobalt websites Vehicle Detail Pages have a clear pattern between new and used cars, like Dealer.com.  Their pattern is <strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">/vehicle-details/certified-</span></strong> or <strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">/vehicle-details/used-</span></strong> <span style="color: #000000;">or  <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>/vehicle-details/new-.  </strong></span></span></p>

<p>There are currently four choices on how to select pages to advertise dynamically.  Those four choices are as follows:</p>
<ul>
<li>URL</li>
<li>Category</li>
<li>Page Title</li>
<li>Page Content</li>
</ul>
<p>Any of these options should be able to get dynamic ads working for your dealership.  For example, using the Page Title search feature on a VinSolutions website, you could identify any pages with the words &#8220;Used Acura&#8221; in the page title to find valid VDP&#8217;s.</p>
<h2>Limitations of Adwords Dynamic Ads</h2>
<p>With any new technology, there are limitations.  Dealers who use dynamic ads are somewhat dependent on the URL structure of their Vehicle Detail Pages (VDP) and how well the Page Titles are formatted.  Dealers who &#8220;frame in&#8221; their inventory would not be a candidate for this product.</p>
<p>Dealers should never frame in their inventory but just today I saw a very respected dealer use framing.  This defeats any SEO benefits that your website platform could provide and now it will impact dynamic advertising opportunities.</p>
<p>Dynamic ads, since they are not generated by an inventory feed like used by Haystak, Cobalt, and Dealer.com have the potential to be misread.  I&#8217;ll have some more specific data on how well Google&#8217;s tools are doing to present the perfect ad for every in-stock piece of inventory.</p>

The conference precluded the 2012 NADA Convention <a href="http://www.digitalmarketingstrategies.org/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2484" title="digital-marketing-strategies-conference" src="http://www.automotivebootcamp.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/digital-marketing-strategies-conference.jpg" alt="" width="283" height="178" /></a>and was perfectly timed so attendees could take advantage of both events.</p>
<p>This year’s event was the first event coordinated and executed under First Class Educators (FCE), the new company formed by PCG Digital Marketing to handle their growing automotive marketing conferences. FCE brought many exciting changes and enhancements to the conference that impressed all who attended, vendors and dealer employees alike.</p>

<p>In an attempt to give dealers clarity on these recent developments, <a href="http://www.firstclasseducators.com/" target="_blank">First Class Educators</a> today announced a very important addition to the 2012 <a href="http://www.digitalmarketingstrategies.org">Digital Marketing Strategies Conference</a> (DMSC) agenda in Las Vegas.   Brian Pasch, CEO of PCG Digital Marketing will moderate a panel discussion with special guests Tim Jackson, President/CEO of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) and Bill Walters, partner at Heizer Paul Grueskin LLP in Denver, Colorado.  The subject of the panel discussion is <em>Dealer Compliance Issues and Internet Marketing.</em></p>

<p>For the first time ever, Susie Isaacs, professional poker player will be attending and playing in the IMACS Poker Tournament. Isaacs has finished in the money of six World Series of Poker (WSOP) ladies&#8217; events, and won the ladies&#8217; championship back-to-back in 1996 and 1997.  She also finished tenth in the $10,000 no limit hold&#8217;em main event in 1998.</p>
